Florists in the United States range from neighborhood flower shops with a walk-in cooler to studio designers who work only by appointment for weddings and events. Most retail florists build arrangements to order, deliver the same day when you call before early afternoon, and belong to a wire network (FTD, Teleflora or BloomNet) that passes out-of-town orders to a local shop. Ordering from the shop directly rather than through a national website usually means more flowers for the money, because no order-gatherer takes a cut. Flower markets and wholesalers sell loose stems and bunches, often early in the morning, and many now open to the public. Flower farms grow seasonal blooms such as dahlias, peonies and sunflowers and sell by the bucket, by subscription or as pick-your-own.

Bayside is in New York, in the Northeast, where four distinct seasons shape local life: hot humid summers, snowy winters that can close businesses for a day, and a dense pattern of towns where walking, transit and street parking all matter. Getting around Bayside is easiest by car; street parking is metered in busy downtown areas, and most suburban businesses have their own lot. Ride-share apps such as Uber and Lyft operate across New York's larger cities, and public transit varies from extensive to minimal.

Not quite sure how to describe my morning, but it turned into something I won’t forget. I had the important task of bringing flowers to my best friend’s mom’s funeral Mass this morning — something I truly wanted to do for her. I arrived at the florist at 9:00 a.m., thinking I had just enough time. The Mass was at 10:30, and I needed to be there early to place the flowers on the altar. But when I got there, the gates were down. It was 9:27 by the time the owner arrived and tried to open the gate. The key wouldn’t work. He tried once… twice… probably ten times. My anxiety was through the roof thinking I might not be able to get the flowers that were meant for someone so special. He suggested another florist down the block, and at that point my “street-smart survival mode” kicked in. I quickly calculated the timing; a 7-minute drive from St Robert’s Church’s; to Bayside Florist . . and thought, maybe, just maybe, this could still work. I walked into Bayside Florist sounding like a complete lunatic and said something like: “Hi, my name is Danielle. This is an emergency. I need a wreath — purple flowers, white roses, anything you can add — and I need it in 17 minutes.” They didn
